Timeless Design: How to Create a Home That Never Feels Dated
By Brittany McNab
One of the most common questions I get is, “What are the current trends you’re seeing today?” or “How can we incorporate these trends into our home?” While the question is always well-intended—read: “How do I make my home look less dated?”—I have to be honest. I kinda hate it.
But before you stop reading, let me make my case for what’s often called Timeless Design.
What is Timeless Design?
In theory, a timeless design is one that looks fresh and stylish no matter the decade. But I believe something is only truly timeless if it resonates with you—if it continues to inspire and delight you over the years.

As a designer, I don’t love filling a home with only trendy pieces. Trends are fleeting, and their novelty wears off fast. But creating a timeless space doesn’t mean it has to be boring, bland, or stuck in a past era. It’s about balance. So, how do we make it work?
Key Principles of Timeless Design
1. Balanced Proportions & Classic Silhouettes
Furniture with clean, classic lines will always stand the test of time. Think of a Chesterfield sofa, mid-century modern chairs, or even a well-proportioned dining table—these pieces remain stylish because they’re rooted in good design principles.
2. Neutral and Natural Color Palettes
Starting with a neutral foundation that you love is a great way to make your space flexible for change should you want it. I am personally fond of changing my style on a whim and switching things out seasonally such as pillows, art, and faux stems. An example of a neutral colour palette might be a white sofa, greige walls, and wood floors. With that palette, colour and interest can be added through fun prints, thrifted accents, or patterned pillows.

3. Quality Over Quantity
I’ve learned this lesson the hard way. A few years ago, I bought a trendy, fast-furniture sofa. Within two years, it was falling apart—such a waste. Meanwhile, the well-made pieces I carefully selected (some even thrifted from Facebook Marketplace) have held up beautifully. Investing in quality doesn’t mean spending a fortune, but it does mean being intentional.
4. Mixing Old and New
A well-designed home looks collected, not like it was bought in a single shopping trip. Incorporating vintage or antique elements—like a thrifted frame or an heirloom lamp—adds depth and character. It’s these unique, storied pieces that make a home feel truly personal.

5. Functional, Livable Layouts
A home should work for you, not just look good in pictures. Be honest with how you really live. That minimalist approach you took to your living room so that it looks like the Rove catalogue maybe felt right at the time, but after living with it for a while you might feel like you could use a bit more storage– or that you’re not a minimalist after all.
Trend-Proofing Your Home: What to Avoid
Overcommitting to trendy colors or statement pieces. That orange Togo sofa was everywhere last year, but now? It already looks dated. If you wouldn’t love it in ten years, reconsider.
Making major decisions based on what’s “hot.” When it comes to high-investment items—kitchen finishes, flooring, stonework—choose what you love, not what’s trending. A good rule of thumb? Ask yourself, Would I be happy living with this forever?
Going all-in on trends. Trends are fun, and I love incorporating a few each year. But a space filled only with trendy items instantly timestamps itself. You don’t want to walk into your home in a decade and think, Wow, this is so 2025.
How to Keep a Home Fresh Without Chasing Trends
Use trendy colors and styles in low-commitment ways, like pillows and decor.
Swap out artwork easily with downloadable prints from Etsy.
Shop secondhand—thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace are goldmines for unique finds.
Layer old and new to create depth and interest, making your home feel curated rather than straight out of a showroom.

Conclusion
Timeless design isn’t about avoiding trends altogether—it’s about knowing where and how to use them. A truly timeless home isn’t stuck in the past or chasing the future; it’s a space that evolves with you, reflecting your style in a way that never feels forced or outdated.
So, the next time you’re tempted to ask, “What’s trending?”—consider flipping the script. Ask instead, “What do I love, and how can I make my home a reflection of that?” Because when your home is built around you, it will always feel timeless.
