Classic Details Are Trending Again
By Georgia Barnes
It’s making a comeback–the traditional details from the past are coming to life again. What was once old is new again. Whether renovating a current space, or building new, here are a few of my favorite classic details to add charm and character back into the home.
Wall Paneling & Millwork
Classic elements like wainscoting, picture frame molding, and beadboard are becoming increasingly popular in many different design styles. These details are the perfect way to add interest and character into a space. These details can often be costly (but worth the investment), so prioritizing them in main spaces such as living rooms, dining rooms and other main spaces can often yield the most impact.

Closed Floor Plans
One of the more popular trends on the rise are closed floor plans. Architects are beginning to shift from the more open floor plans that have become popular in recent years, back to smaller rooms and more defined spaces. While some spaces still work best with an open floor plan and large gathering spaces, smaller rooms offer a more intimate setting. These smaller and more closed-off rooms allow greater opportunity to play with color and pattern, without feeling overwhelming. Each room is able to stand on its own, while still feeling cohesive.

Patinaed Finishes
Patinaed and aged finishes are slowly making their way back into homes. Finishes such as brushed nickel and matte black are moving aside for more historical and classic metals. Aged and unlacquered metals like raw brass bring such a lovely tone and warmth to a home. Cabinet hardware, lighting and plumbing fixtures can be an easy way to add these lived-in metals you your space.
Traditional Patterns
Classic floor designs like checkerboard stone flooring, herringbone hardwood, and mosaic tile are being used once again. These floors are timeless for a reason and with them come incredible versatility. Unique flooring options are a great way to bring pattern and color to a space. I love using a statement floor in entryways, bathrooms and mudrooms. Though trending again, these patterns will never truly go out of style!

Arches & Curves
The popular “modern farmhouse” style is being replaced with a more European-influenced point of view. With this trend, we are seeing more arches and curves being used in both interiors and exteriors. Introducing curves in doorways, cabinetry and furniture will help add a beautiful softness to a space that feels comfortable and classic. I love that this trend can be utilized in both the modern and traditional home and everything between.

Trends will continue to change, but traditional (in my opinion) will always be current. Finding ways to incorporate classic and historical details into the modern home will help what is new, stand the test of time.
