How to Select the Perfect Curtains for Your Home

By Chelsea Laspada of Casa de Laspada

Curtains are more than just a functional addition to your home to block light — they are finishing touches that frame your windows, enhance your decor and style of your space, and make your home feel more upscale and complete. Curtains are undoubtedly one of my favorite go-to’s when designing spaces for my clients (and myself!) and are such an impactful addition that add depth and sophistication. When deciding on the right curtains for your home, it’s important to consider function, style, and space.

This guide will help break down all the things to keep in mind as you’re selecting the perfect curtains and give you the best outcome to make your space feel elevated, custom, and functional without breaking the bank!

Consider Function First

When first considering curtains, be sure to ask yourself, “what is the purpose?” Are your main goals light control, privacy, or just decoration? This initial direction will help narrow down the best options for your space. The purpose of curtains could be different for each room — for example, a bedroom will likely require blackout curtains for the best functionality while sleeping while a formal living room may benefit from light-filtering options that help make the space feel bright and airy.

These will be very important considerations and decisions to make for each room of your home before beginning your search. Also, don’t forget other practical decisions like ease of use, cleaning, and durability.

Match your Style and Aesthetic

There are dozens of options for materials that all bring a different vibe to your space. For me, I love the look of linen and the texture and organic nature of the fabric bodes well in my organic modern home. However, there are many fabric choices that can match your style and aesthetic.

  • Velvet brings drama and sophistication,

  • linen is more textural and organic,

  • and cotton brings a breezy, casual comfort.

You can also consider a pattern to bring interest to a more neutral space — this can really provide a bold and unique look!

There’s also length and layering to consider. Floor length is elegant and adds height to any room. Layering curtains over other window treatments like roman shades adds depth and dimension.

There are many ways to play with the materials, colors, patterns, and length to create the ideal curtain formula for a space that is uniquely you!

Take Measurements Seriously

Once you’ve narrowed in on your function, style, and fabric, it’s time for measuring. Ensure you have plenty of time to be thorough and precise in this stage to avoid any miscalculations and errors in your custom specifications.

A good rule of thumb to get the most out of your curtain placement is to hang them 1.5 to 3 times the width and height of your window for fullness — this gives the illusion of height and space and really makes the room feel larger and more grand.

Be sure to consider where you want your curtains to hit the floor:

  • break on the floor,

  • slightly puddle on the floor,

  • or not touching the floor.

It’s recommended to hang the rod prior to measuring to ensure accuracy. Additionally, choosing your header type (soft top, grommet, pleated or ripple fold, etc.) will be necessary to get the proper measurements.
