Decorating Your Home for Fall

"Time to get cozy! Tips and ideas to make your home autumn ready." - Marianne Wallace

You can feel it all around you... The air is suddenly brisk; red and golden toned leaves

carpet the streets; the scent of pumpkin spice lattes envelops you as soon as you walk into a coffee shop. Fall is here. But before you reach for that old blanket, cozy up by a fireplace and stream your favourite fall movie (any fans of When Harry Met Sally out there?), how about embracing the change of seasons and decorating your home for fall? Season decorating can be a lot of fun and there is way more to fall décor than pumpkin patches!

The Fall Palette

Just have a peek outside! The autumnal season is sprinkled with an array of earthy and

warm colours that graduate from ambers and ochres to browns and crimsons. The idea of seasonal décor is that not your entire home will need to follow that colour palette; just small accents here and there to echo the rich shades and tints of the landscape outside your window.

The Fall Palette

Fall Blossoms and Foliage

Start by bringing those fall colours indoors with flowers. When it comes to fall plants, mums immediately come to mind and they are a classic choice for most gardens and front porches. But the beauty of fall décor is that you simply don’t need any greenery at all. Simply collect some fallen branches and foliage from your backyard or your morning walks, and you will have a stylish, beautiful and, even better, free fall arrangement.

Accessorizing for Fall

Besides flowers, another easy way to embrace fall is with accessories that reflect the season’s textures and patterns. Think knitted throws and flannel blankets, wicker and leather baskets, plaid cushions; anything that evokes a feeling of warmth and comfort. Create a fall vignette by placing a leather basket with blankets by a fireplace; scattering plaid pillows on the sofa; or simply by just leaving those copper pots and pans out on display.

Now that your accessories are in place, let’s create some fall ambiance. Fall season is all about coziness, so it’s important to create a feeling of layered warmth that comforts and hugs you. The soft glow of candles is a great way to cast such feeling. And don’t forget to turn off those overhead lights and turn on your floor and table lamps for a softer and layered look that adds more depth to your space.

Lifting the Curtain on Fall

And last but not least, let’s not forget about fall curtains! No matter the season, no décor is complete without window treatment. For that snug and cozy feel, invest in rich, bold colours and heavyweight materials. Fabrics such as wools and velvets are a great choice to help insulate your home against the cool air outside. Not only do they bring comfort and warmth during the cold season, they also create an inviting atmosphere that is both luxurious and elegant all year round. And speaking of timeless design, how about layering those curtains? By pairing a heavier material such as velvet with a light and airy one such as a sheer, you will create a refined and dramatic look that is suitable for all seasons and certain to stand the test of time.

When it comes to fall décor, you don’t need to commit to anything big and overwhelming; after all, fall is not a holiday, it’s just a change of seasons. Sometimes small details go a long way: a fall tablescape, a wreath on your front door, the sweet aroma of apple cider simmering on your cooktop... Just cozy up and enjoy the season.
