Creating the Ralph Lauren Look with Drapery
By Kelsey McGregor
It’s no surprise that the 90s Ralph Lauren aesthetic is trending in interiors. Its recent resurgence in fashion inspiration and an explosion of maximalist interior style truly paved the way for a comeback of this timeless, layered, and refined design style.

The Ralph Lauren aesthetic draws heavily on a traditional American style with influences of English country manors with a nod to collegiate and equestrian influences. Warmth and coziness radiate from these rooms while still giving a balance of masculine and feminine – think tailored, structured furniture paired with soft accents and mixed patterns. A color palette of warm neutrals is accented with deep navy, hunter green, burgundy, chocolate brown, and charcoal giving a sophisticated moodiness.
And perhaps what Ralph Lauren interior design is most known for is its rich pattern play – specifically leaning into collegiate plaid and tartan prints – a KLD fave!
One of the easiest ways to get the Ralph Lauren look in your home is with your drapery. Here’s what to look for when selecting panels that give this Americana look.

Classic Patterns
Plaid, striped, herringbone patterns are common pattern choices for Ralph Lauren inspired home. The timeless yet tailored styles will easily communicate the preppy look you’re going for. I really wanted to make a statement in this room, and the tartan plaid Sara Le print pleated drapes from TWOPAGES instantly became the focal point of our cozy, layered living room.

Structured Fabrics
Wool, linen or cotton blends are crucial in achieving the Ralph Lauren look. We’re looking for texture play as much as pattern play. Having thick, cozy drapes to complement a mix of natural materials like leather, wood, velvet, and brass set the tone.
Full-length panels
You’ll notice every Ralph Lauren inspired room design has floor-to-ceiling drapes. Hanging the full-length of the wall has the illusion of height in your space as it draws the eye up, giving the room an appearance of grandeur that’s synonymous with the RL style.

Hardware
Don’t forget about your hardware when selecting your drapery! To get this look, you’ll opt for simple but substantial rods in brass, antique bronze, or dark wood finishes. The drapes should be the star here, and the hardware should be subtle and complementary to your fun pattern choice.
Layered Drapery
Don’t be afraid to layer your drapery, too! We love to hang roman shades on the windows flanked by our panels. Another option is to hang sheer panels alongside your patterned drapes. This style is all about layered luxury!
Love the Ralph Lauren look and ready to try it out for yourself? Studies, living rooms and bedrooms are great places to start! Once you’ve selected the perfect drapery for your space, try incorporating traditional furniture pieces like tufted sofas and wingback chairs in complementing patterns. Choose a statement overhead light fixture and include ambient light with classic sconces and lamps. Style the space with antiques and stacks of books for a worldly, lived-in feel. And be sure to finish the room with a collection of patterned throw pillows.
