The Subtle Evolution of a Room
By Leslie Davis
Even a room beautifully created and curated by a designer should be given space to evolve subtly and thoughtfully. I first designed our moody primary bedroom, featuring color-drenched walls and coffered ceilings, with a refined neutral palette infused with soft jade accents. The original curtains echoed this neutral color palette. The room was serene, cohesive, and undeniably elegant.

A Shift Toward Blue
As time passed and my collection of blue and white china and porcelain grew, I found myself wanting to lean into my passion for blue tones and a richer palette. A new comforter introduced a soft, layered blue pattern that was still cohesive with the dark grey palette. Accessories and lamps moved to different rooms in the house, and new blue and white pieces gradually made their way here.
The Transformative Power of Curtains
I always tell my clients that a room is never complete until the curtains are hung. The transformative power they have to complete a room is not surprising, as they occupy one of the largest vertical spaces in a room. They can make a neutral room feel alive, a monotone room feel layered, or a bold space feel grounded. In our bedroom, the new blue curtains were the final piece to creating a coherent color story.

Gradual Evolution in Design
The best type of evolution a room can undergo is when our personalities and preferences gradually take hold within the original design. The key point here is to step back and evaluate the cohesiveness of the directional shift.
Details Create Cohesion
Design is always about the details, and repetition creates movement for the eye and cohesion. Lamps, Chinese vases, and painted furniture referenced the blue tones, creating continuity without feeling forced. A custom pillow in the same shade as the curtains echoed the new palette.

Recognize that the evolution of a room occurs through gradual tweaks over time, rather than sweeping changes. Small, intentional changes allow the room to reflect your tastes without losing its original soul. In this case, I knew the blue curtains would provide an anchor for the room and its new direction, giving it depth, personality, and cohesiveness while embracing my passion for blue and white pieces.
Curtains are more than window dressing. They are a design tool that affects mood, balance, and scale. In this room, the shift from neutral tonal fabrics and textures to a layered blue palette demonstrates how one thoughtful choice after another can redefine a space. Without new furniture or a significant redecorating effort, the new curtains brought to completion a new chapter for the room.
