One of the most common questions that home decor lovers ask it is if they should change the curtains for seasons like Halloween or Christmas.
There are some factors to take into account, especially if you live in a rental property and you deal with old windows, then you have to consider to add curtains as insulation. Also we have to think in terms of style. Do we love seasonal colors or do we prefer neutral? Are we minimalist or maximalist? Do we like bright and airy, or create a cozy moody space?
For example, in this design the client wanted that the dining room always looked elegant with a Christmas touch, so the curtains have gold pattern.
Insulation
As a designer and home decorator I always think in terms of functionality first, and then I coordinated with my clients’ style, color preferences and what is the feeling that they want to apply to the room.
When the season changes, I like to suggest velvet or polyester, those heavy fabrics can serve as an insulation when it gets colder, and create the ilusion of a warm room, while for the hot months I recommend cotton or linen because of the breezy touch.
Aesthetic
The good thing about draperies is that you can switch them often if you like to update your rooms, and have different looks in the year. So if you actually have shades and drapes, I like to suggest to have the shades in a solid color or white, so the drapes can have patterns and different colors, and that way is more pleasant to the eye.
For this seating area the need to fill the high walls make us decided to add velvet curtains since is an eye-heavy fabric. But also the client wanted to have all seasons, so the Green represents Christmas and Summer at the same time.
This design is contemporary so it was important to have the curtains in a solid color, but since the project was finished between Halloween and Thanksgiving, I added earth colors.
If You Love Seasonal Decor
If you are in love with seasonal decoration, and it’s your style to match your accents with your curtains, I definitely would say to go ahead and choose colors that can be coordinated to create harmony. For fall season I’d like to have moody natural greens with browns, yellows, and reds that works with the decorative pumpkins and spooky items. When Christmas is coming having green or gold is my top choice, but now it’s very trendy to have Scandinavian Christmas style with neutrals and mute colors.
Where to Have Seasonal Drapes
I mostly recommend to have seasonal curtains in the rooms where you most socialize like the family, living room, and the dining room. For rooms like the master bedroom or the spare room/home office I vote for calm neutrals or cozy warm colors.
About Patterns
It’s usually easier find patterns that represents Spring or Summer, especially botanical theme, but you can find the ones that are for Fall and Winter. Among those I like to recommend plaid and leaves with fall colors, or Scandinavian style branches for Winter. The cute pumpkins leave it for your kid’s room or maybe for a small kitchen window.
In this design you can see custom drapes. The green background and the gold trees represent Christmas.
