Roswell, Georgia Greatroom Project: Adding Casual Sophistication With Curtains

By Lanada Chanel Duncan

The goal of this project was to modernize the dining room by giving it an updated and casually sophisticated look and feel.

Using bright neutral earth tones with a burst of color, mixed metals and smooth textures, I created a mystique sense of elegance and made the room feel comfortable and welcoming enough for family and friends to enjoy.

Design Vision: Creating a Welcoming, Light-Filled Space

The entire greatroom consists of two adjacent spaces that both get a lot of natural light during the day. While one side of the room serves as an area for welcoming house guest while sipping on a cocktail, the other is used for gathered dining. Whether it’s sunlight or moonlight, the room has its own way of welcoming you with comfort from any of the three entrances you enter – from the large French doors that open onto the deck, the foyer or the kitchen.

To dress the one large window in the room, I chose TWOPAGES unlined Liz Linen Pleated Curtains because of its variety of easy-care soft linen, neutral toned fabrics which support a low-maintenance lifstyle and adds a sense of calm and casualness to the space.

Styling Details: Placement, Texture, and Harmony

I kept the curtains hanging straight without tiebacks to further add to a relaxed look, and used the fabric color and texture to add depth to the room. This helps create a warm natural glow as the curtains filter light during the day, and allows evening meals and conversations to be held around the dinner table without the nusense of harsh glares.

Functional Beauty: Daylight, Privacy, and Elevated Comfort

In the evening, curtains can be drawn to provide privacy without neglecting style, keeping the room looking and feeling cozy.

To give curtains a more custom tailored look, I had the headers pinch pleated and the pleats memory trained. This also gives the space a slightly elevated casualness and keeps it relevant to my objective for the room.

I used the curtains to tie the open-concept floor plan together perfectly as their colors match the toss pillows on the sofa in the sitting area. Then hung them high enough to give a heightened sense to the ceiling in the dining area. They gently touch the darkened hardwood floors, to which they also serve as a great contrast; and most importantly, they offer the everyday living functionality needed to enjoy this greatroom entertaining space the way it’s meant to be experienced.
