New Romans Give Spaces an Instant Upgrade

By Kristen Cuthbert

Oftentimes, window treatments are just as much a necessity as they are a luxury. When it comes to dressing a space, things like privacy and light filtration should always be taken into consideration. Some spaces, such as entry ways and hallways or rooms facing a private backyard, do not always need to have window treatments. On the contrary, bathrooms and bedrooms almost always need their windows to be dressed. And dressed well! Depending on who is living in the space, you would want to take things like ease of use and light-blockage into consideration. You’ll also want to select your shade’s lift mechanism based on accessibility. Can you reach the entire shade? Great! You could then consider a cordless clutch system. Is the shade a little high for you? Ok, perhaps a cord draw would be the best fit for you. Maybe your windows are located very high in your room or run from the floor to the ceiling? How beautiful! A motorized lift system would then be the way to go!

As an example, in our most recent project, we upgraded three adjacent spaces with new window treatments: the girls room, the boys room and their shared bath.

In the bathroom, the window is frosted but in the after-dark and wee-morning hours, the homeowners wanted to be able to draw a shade for additional privacy. They also wanted the window dressed with something to warm up the space and aesthetically complement the bathroom's decor. We went with the Custom Relaxed Roman Shade in Sefana Silber’s Block Print Grey with privacy shade liner at 60%. The outcome is gorgeous. The treatments were easy to install with three brackets that give you some play in case you don’t hang them exactly. The shades are very secure and offer the classic gray space an enhanced feeling of both warmth and function.

In both children’s bedrooms, we went with the Custom Relaxed Roman Shades in Isabella’s Navy for the boys and Pink for the girls. In the bedrooms, we upgraded the lining to 100% blackout. Both shades are perfect for little ones trying to nap during the day or sleep in a little bit later on brighter mornings. Both are cord draw and easy to maneuver. The swoop of the relaxed roman gives the spaces a welcoming feel without being too tailored for everyday use. A homerun!

In conclusion, when choosing your window treatments, consider the function first and then consider the style. Personally, I love a relaxed roman for a stand alone window. The swoop is approachable and friendly. For windows that are directly adjacent to one another, I typically opt for a traditional roman that will be easier to line up without a lot of maintenance to the creases in the fabric. For aesthetics, go with something neutral if you’re dressing a window in a transition space or a room that already has a strong aesthetic. Pattern play is so much fun so you can always consider putting complementary colors together with different scales. The sky is the limit!
