Mila Interiors Adds Warmth and Style to a Bohemian Maui Home

On our most recent residential design project by Mila Interiors, we were thrilled to create a fully imagined family home in Maui, Hawaii.  The property is situated in Haiku, a lush area of Maui with rolling hills, grazing horses and friendly locals.

When we first sat down with our clients, one of our main goals was to create a relaxed, welcoming environment that meshed effortlessly with the island’s natural beauty.   Our secret ingredient? Custom bamboo shades from TWOPAGES.

Why We Always Include Natural Materials

In Maui, you realize quickly that the connection between indoors and outdoors is truly part of daily life. Style & Function

While style was key, function was equally important. In the bedrooms our goal for our clients was to create a dark environment for restful sleep.  This was essential in a place where sunrise can be early and very bright. We used blackout lining on the bedroom shades not only to block out the light but also to provide a subtle insulating layer.  That was a great choice in order to control temperature within the home in a sustainable way as well. 

We made sure to mount the shades on the outside of the window frame which made a big difference in the long run.  It maximized light blockage by covering the entire window opening, creating total darkness for a peaceful night of sleep.  In the living and dining areas, we took a different approach. We left the bamboo shades unlined, allowing the natural light to filter through while still offering privacy. It’s a balance that works beautifully for everyday living.

One of the things we love most about bamboo shades is how versatile they are. For this Maui project, we used them in every type of space including kids’ bedrooms, adult common areas, and the kitchen.  In the kids’ rooms, the blackout lining helped create a cozy, restful environment for naps and bedtime. The material is durable enough to stand up to everyday family life, and the natural material paired wonderfully with playful children's decor.

In the kitchen, bamboo shades were the perfect accent piece in the overall room design. The kitchen cabinets were painted in a bright white, which was a strong contrast to the earthy tones found throughout the home.  In order to combat the stark white nature of the kitchen, we brought in the bamboo shades to add a much needed touch of warmth. Their natural tone added instant softness and texture which made the space feel more inviting without overpowering the design.
