Interior Design Layering Tips: Create a Rich, Cozy, and Cohesive Home
By Caitlin Fitch
There is an art to “layering” when considering interior spaces. It requires a keen eye – one I feel any of us can possess – and a willingness to “just got for it”. In other words, be intentional and don’t second guess yourself when mixing and matching colors, patterns, textures and even different design styles. There is cohesion to be found in layering and when done well you are left with a profoundly elevated space with an abundance of visual appeal that will leave your guests in awe.

The Foundations of Layering
Layering makes a space feel welcoming and inviting. When designing with the intention of introducing layers begin with an anchor point – the rug, hardwood finishes and tile depending on the space. Rugs will inherently begin to introduce color pallets to the room from which you can pull and begin establishing your primary colors for the room. Next you will select your statement pieces – this typically refers to your larger furniture selections or a beautiful piece of art.

Layering Accents and Elements
Once you have established your foundational pieces, introduce furniture in a mix of finishes, fabrics and textures to create intrigue. You may also want to consider different shapes and silhouettes – playing with different design styles that complement one another. Now that your furniture is in place you’ve established different styling vignettes in the room. Bring together books for coffee tables and end tables, pillows and throws in accent colors on your sofa or bed, beautiful artwork and trays filled with personal and collected objects at varying heights and shapes. Remember, this is an organic process…I encourage you invite yourself to “play” until you land on the right mix of colors, objects and textures.

Lighting
Start by identifying sources of natural light in the room - the space will usually dictate what type of lighting is needed in terms of brightness, as a result. But when it comes to lighting layering is so important – you should have multiple light sources in a single space. Add ceiling fixtures, table and floor lamps, and pendants and wall lights if the space allows for it. Layered lighting creates a more ambient feature to the overall aesthetic of the room.

Wall Coverings
Wall coverings can meet a lot of things, from your chosen paint colors and wallpapers to your selections of personalized artwork and wall hangings. Each adds character and depth so make your selections with intention. For paint consider the primary color ways you’ve chosen for the space and if using wallpaper don’t be afraid to introduce complementary but different patterns and textures not yet seen in the space. When in doubt variety always adds intrigue.
