Instantly Elevate Any Bathroom with Custom Curtain Panels
By Ashley Southworth, Owner of Southworth Interior Design
When it comes to bathrooms, there’s one detail that’s often overlooked but has the power to completely transform the space: the shower curtain.

Most people settle for the standard version you can grab at any big-box store. At around 72 inches long, these curtains are rarely flattering. If you hang them low so the bottom barely touches the floor, the top leaves a wide, awkward gap that makes ceilings feel short. If you hang them higher, they just graze below the rim of the tub, leaving the whole shower looking unfinished—like it’s wearing highwaters.
As a designer, I’m always searching for small, elevated touches that make a room feel intentional. I’ve long preferred using 96”–108” curtain panels in bathrooms, but recently I took it a step further by swapping out the curtains in my daughter’s bathroom for custom panels from TWOPAGES. The transformation was immediate—what once felt simply cute and functional now exudes polish, luxury, and a truly finished look.

Why Custom Beats Standard
Custom curtains give you full control over height and width, which makes all the difference. Hanging them taller draws the eye upward, instantly making ceilings feel higher and the room more grand. Adding extra width creates a fuller drape, so the panels look luxurious rather than skimpy. These small details deliver that designer look without the expense of a full tub/shower remodel.
There’s also the personality factor. With TWOPAGES, you can choose from a wide range of fabrics and trims—or even request a custom pairing if your dream combination isn’t listed online. They’ll even send sample books so you can see colors and textures in person, which makes decision-making easy and fun.

The Details That Made the Difference
My husband and I recently invested in new flooring throughout our home, which included fresh tile in our daughter’s bathroom. The patterned tile paired beautifully with the existing wall color and instantly added charm to the space. Even with the new tile, the room felt like it was missing something. Since a remodel wasn’t in the budget, I turned to custom curtain panels—an affordable way to elevate a standard inset tub/shower combo.
For this bathroom, I selected a neutral checkered plaid fabric with a blue embroidered trim. The trim adds a playful, whimsical detail that feels perfect for a kid’s bathroom. To showcase the trim, I opted for a split curtain (two panels) instead of a single panel. We paired the curtains with a custom width brass rod, which ties beautifully into the updated champagne brass plumbing fixtures while adding warmth to the space.
To carry the color story throughout the room, we hung butterfly artwork from Scout Design Studio beside the shower. The pops of soft blue and pink in the art echo the trim on the curtains and play nicely with the patterned tile. Suddenly, every detail felt connected, and the bathroom looks like a cohesive, thoughtfully designed space.

Don’t Forget the Practical Side
If you’re considering this upgrade, don’t skip the waterproof liner. A quick search for “extra-long waterproof shower curtain liner” will point you in the right direction. You can layer the liner discreetly by either attaching it with shower rings to the back of the panels or slipping its grommets over the drapery hooks before securing them. Both approaches protect your fabric from water damage and make cleaning simple.

Final Thoughts
Bathrooms are often treated as purely utilitarian, but with a few thoughtful choices, they can feel just as inviting and stylish as the rest of your home. Custom curtains are one of my favorite ways to add both function and personality. With the right fabric, trim, and hardware, you can transform a bathroom from basic to beautiful in an afternoon.

For me, this change in my daughter’s bathroom turned an everyday necessity into a little moment of joy—and that’s exactly what good design should do.
