Incorporating Patterns Can Infuse Personality to Your Space
By Kristen Cuthbert
When pulling together a space, the use of patterns can be both overwhelming and underrated. One of the most challenging things to emulate in design is a pleasant usage of patterns that both play off yet compliment of one another. The good news is that design is art and there really are no rules to achieving the look that you desire for your own space. There are, however, some helpful guidelines that you can use to maximize your results.
1. Understand the Role of Patterns
Patterns aren’t just decoration – they’re a way to express your style in a unique and vibrant way. Between stripes and florals, geometric patterns and plaids, the options are endless. Using them together in a successful way may actually be counterintuitive: they cannot be too close a match! Try using contrasting patterns such as a small floral against a bold gingham check. Or a large scale stripe against a tiny polka dot. Just be sure that there is one complimentary attribute such as a shared color story or texture.

2. Start with a Neutral Base
Starting can be the hardest part. But the good news is that you can start slow and safe to try out some different combinations. Use a neutral backdrop for your larger pieces, like your wall paint and your sofa or accent chairs. Then, layer on for style. For example, a neutral sofa can become the backdrop for a combination of patterned throw pillows or a printed area rug.

3. Vary the Scale of Patterns
An interesting way to add personalization and depth to your space is by combining patterns of varying sizes. Large-scale patterns paired with smaller scaled patterns can create interest and cohesion especially when they have a shared color story. You can also try the same patterns with opposite coloring such a windowpane print reflecting a tan background with cream lines on one object in the room and then the opposite on another object nearby: a cream background with tan lines. The options are endless.

4. Create a Focal Point
Every room needs a focal point, and patterns can help you create one. A bold patterned wall, a large printed rug, or a statement piece of furniture can all serve as the centerpiece. Once you have a statement piece in place, build around it with complementary patterns that don’t compete for attention but instead enhance the overall design. Using too many patterns can create a chaotic experience in a space. But a few well chosen ones can make the space special and incredibly unique!
For example, a patterned rug can serve as a textured and playful foundation to a space. You can then build on that and pull out some of the rugs featured colors to implement when choosing furnishings and decor to finish the space.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment
Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment. Mixing patterns is a creative process, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Try starting with some patterns that you love and then add in more patterned items that have complimenting colors or textures, and build from there!
Conclusion
Pattern play comes with no rules! Try different combinations until you find one that works for you. Remember to mix large scale and small scale prints but use one color story to create a cohesive and intentional experience. Use neutral walls and furniture as your base and then incorporate your patterns through window treatments, linens, throw pillows, blankets and rugs. And use one large scale pattern as the focal point while complimenting with solids and small prints to round out your design and bring depth and character to your space!
