How to Use Curtains Without Blocking a View

By Catie Rippin

Curtains are a great way to add style, warmth and privacy to any space, but when you have a beautiful view outside your windows, it’s important to make sure they’re used properly to not block that view.

I recently helped my parents furnish their new house here in Southern California, and while they love their harbor view, they quickly realized that the morning sun was very blinding, so we needed a solution that would be practical, but wouldn’t distract from the view outside. Here are a few tips for using curtains in your own spaces when the view outside your window is just as important and the one inside!

1. Choose the Right Curtain Fabric & Style

Fabric choice is key--sheer curtains or a light linen are always a great option to filter light while keeping the view visible. It’s also important to think about the liner you choose so you’re not adding unnecessary heaviness to your curtains. A ripple fold on a track could be a good option for easily opening them when not in use. For my parents’ house, we chose the TWOPAGES Liz Linen Ripple Fold Drapery on the Lora Track, which allows us to effortlessly open and close the curtains when needed. We decided not to line them so we would get the light filtering benefits without sacrificing the view, even when they’re closed.

2. Play with Color

Neutral or soft tones blend into the space, keeping the eye focused outward. If you want to use a pattern, try to pick something with subtle movement so it doesn’t compete with the view. For this project, we kept things simple and chose white since there are already so many vibrant colors outside to focus on.

3. Styling Tips

Treat curtains as the structure for the view, like a picture frame. Play with placement—sometimes it’s best to mount curtains higher and wider than the window frame to draw the eye upward. Using floor-to-ceiling panels can make the windows look larger and keep sightlines open. We were able to use two large panels on both sides of room rather than many small panels as the doors span almost the entire length of the space. This allows for a seamless look when they’re closed and looks much cleaner.

Window treatments are a huge part of making a space feel complete, and there’s no need to compromise that even when you’re trying to preserve a view. If you follow these simple tips, I’m confident you’ll be able to enjoy a gorgeous space inside and out with the help of TWOPAGES!
