How to Style the Everyday Kitchen
By Caitlin Fitch of Caitlin Fitch Designs
Styling the everyday kitchen for form and function does not have to be a daunting task. There are attainable ways to make the hardest working room in the house look aesthetically pleasing without sacrificing on function. There are many beautiful vignettes to be had in the kitchen…
Stylized Functionality
Consider the items you reach for the most in the kitchen and collect them with style in mind. The stovetop caddy is a big one for me. Over the years I’ve collected pieces from my travels all over the world that sit in this caddy…the tray itself, the bowls and cellars that adorn it, right down to the vintage glass and silver vessel that carry my toothpicks. Items I use daily sitting in a beautifully arranged vignette. Similarly, you could incorporate timeless hanging copper pots, woven textiles, a collected basket or vintage bowl to house your most reached for produce and fruit.

Countertop Lighting
Lighting for the kitchen should be intentional and intriguing, but did you ever consider thinking outside the “normal” lighting moments for this space? Beautiful and unexpected countertop lighting instantly adds warmth and idyllic ambience that will leave you feeling an unconditional invitation to linger around the island or kitchen table just a little bit longer for that extra glass of wine with friends or late-night piece of pie.

Artwork & Literature
Leaning or beautifully hung artwork and stacks of frequented cookbooks create vignettes that instantly bring the charm. These moments can be had on your in-kitchen shelving, a stone ledge, in your pantry or in an otherwise empty corner on your countertop. Layer these items together for a more intentional and visually appealing look.

Greenery (Faux or Real)
Greenery is always welcome. Yes, even if its faux. Use some real estate on your island or countertop to style one of your favorite vessels with seasonal florals and greens. When the time of year calls for it and if you fancy yourself a green thumb, bring fresh cut stems in from the garden or visit your favorite local shop to purchase faux stems that are reflective of the season. And don’t be afraid to style your vessels and arrangements with frequently used produce in the kitchen – line your favorite vase with lemons or limes before putting in your stems. It’s a perfect added touch in the kitchen.

Window Treatments
The best way to add charm and character to the kitchen in my opinion is introducing café curtains to the space. Reminiscent of European cafes and bistros, this element in the space instantly feels transportive. You can incorporate timeless patterns or stick with solid hues that complement your overall color palette – you can’t go wrong with either approach. This detail adds tremendous texture and dimension to your kitchen while still allowing plenty of natural light to flood in. When in doubt, opt for the café curtains you’ve been eyeing.
