Guide to Designing Your Baby’s Dream Nursery

By Caitlin Fitch of Caitlin Fitch Designs

Designing your newborn’s nursery is a magical process – one that celebrates a monumental life milestone. The nursery serves as a sanctuary for your little bundle of joy and the rest of the family embracing their newest addition. While a nursery is a space that is highly functional it is also a space that is ripe with opportunity to implement a lot of design details to honor this phase of life and the many that follow. Here a few tried and true tips I come back to time and again when designing a nursery room.

Design with Time in Mind

Create a space that will transition through time, so you aren’t having to reinvent the wheel every time your growing little one hits a milestone. You can still create a whimsical nursery with pops of color and fun décor accents while keeping the foundational elements of the space more timeless – this could include wall color and wallpaper selections, millwork, furniture selections, and light fixtures.

Utilize Functional Décor

Think about the storage you might need in the space and toys that serve as styling pieces and purchase accordingly. Introduce aesthetically pleasing and quality storage solutions that withstand time as tastes and interests evolve and promote organization early on. Similarly, teddy bears put on display and children’s books stored vertically can be swapped out, over time, for trophies and collected treasures.

Invest Where it Counts

Invest in the pieces that will be used for years to come. Buy a crib that converts into a toddler bed and a dresser that they will use well into their teen years. You wont regret the spend.

Make it Theirs

You can create a space that withstands different phases of life and still make it uniquely theirs. Introduce fun décor and pops of color that reflect their unique personalities and interests. Shifting décor over time is an easy, low-cost way to recreate a room that is reflective of where your child is in their own journey of life at any given time.

Have Fun with Textiles

The textiles in the space – the rug underfoot, the window treatments, the bedding and pillows – are great accents in the room to introduce transitional prints and color palettes or completely lean into specific phases of life. These aspects of a room are fun ways to lean into the story you are weaving through your design.
