4 Tips for Creating a Welcoming Dining Room

By Ashley Patterson

I have a not-so-secret obsession with dining rooms and gathering spaces. Maybe it’s because I spent 15 years in tiny NYC apartments where a “dining room” meant a fold-down table wedged against a wall (if you were even lucky enough to have space for a table!). There’s something magical about creating a dedicated space for gathering, sharing meals, and lingering over good conversation. Whether you’re working with a formal dining room or carving out a dining space in an open concept home, I’m excited to share some of my favorite tips for creating an inviting dining space that you’ll actually use.

Get Your Proportions Right!

You’ll want to start with the basics – scale and proportion are super important in a dining room. I’ve fallen in love with many a massive farmhouse table, but I’ve had to exercise restraint – you don’t want a table so large that it overwhelms your space. I recommend starting with these key measurements: you want at least 36 inches between your table and walls (or other furniture), and at least 24 inches of table width per person. If you’re incorporating a rug, add about 2 feet on each side of the dining table for optimal rug size.

Create Comfort Through Thoughtful Furniture Selection

Your table choice sets the tone for the entire space. Round tables are fantastic for conversation flow and work wonders in square rooms or smaller spaces. Rectangular tables are classic and can be great for longer rooms. But if you remember one thing from this article, it’s this: don’t feel pressured to buy a matching dining set! The most inviting dining rooms feature intentionally mismatched chairs or a mix of chairs and banquette seating.

Don’t forget about storage pieces – a beautiful sideboard or buffet not only provides practical storage, but it also creates an opportunity for styling and serving. In my Connecticut home, we found a vintage credenza that adds character while hiding all our linens, candles, special occasion dinnerware, and the random kids’ toys that seem to always pile up on my dining table!

Make Lighting A Priority

Lighting dictates the overall vibe of your dining room. There is nothing worse than terrible overhead lighting. When it comes to lighting, I’m a firm believer in layers. Start with a statement chandelier or pendant hung at the right height (30-36 inches above your table is a good rule of thumb). Add wall sconces or buffet lamps for ambiance, and always, always install dimmers. Trust me on this one! The ability to adjust lighting levels is crucial for creating the right mood. And finally, top off your tablescape with candles (tapers are my favorite)!

Add Personality and Warmth

This is my favorite part! Layer in textiles through curtains, a rug (if practical for your lifestyle – I personally don’t think a dining room rug is a must-have), and beautiful table linens. Art can make a huge impact in dining rooms. I love oversized statement pieces. And don’t forget about bringing in natural elements. A simple bowl of seasonal fruit or a vase of fresh flowers or greenery can instantly make your dining room feel more welcoming.

How To Handle Common Dining Room Challenges

Working with a small space? Consider a round table or drop-leaf design that can expand when needed. In open concept homes, use a large rug to define the dining area and consider the sight lines from all angles. For multi-functional spaces (hello to my husband who now works at our dining room table most days!), invest in beautiful storage solutions that can hide work items when it’s time to gather.

The most important thing to remember is that the best dining rooms are the ones that get used. Don’t create a space that feels too precious or formal. Layer in personal touches, comfortable seating, and elements that make you want to linger a little longer over that last cup of coffee or glass of wine.
