Designing Your Primary Suite

Your primary suite is more than just a bedroom, it’s your sanctuary and retreat at the end of your days. It’s where you wake up to start anew each morning. When asked where to start an interior design journey I always advise clients to invest in their primary suite – if you can only do one space in your home to start, start there. It’s the most luxurious way to pamper yourself – and you are worth the pampering. When looking to approach the design of your primary bedroom there are a several aspects to pay attention to.
Color Palette
Whether you prefer a light and airy or dark and moody foundation – start here. Despite what you may think, a dark and moody color on the walls can be equally as calming and even, at times, more inviting and cozier. For our primary bedroom we opted for a dark and moody color palette as our foundation and layered it with some lighter elements in our window treatments, fabric selection for our slipcovered bed and bed linens, and rug. This allows the space to obtain some balance throughout
Accent Ceiling
When you can introduce any sort of millwork to a space, I’ll always recommend it. The concept of an accent wall is well known and a bit overdone, but an accent ceiling is a brilliant way to create a focal point in your space that feels fresh and intriguing. Here we used beadboard panels inside the tray ceiling to create added texture and vertical appeal. The eye is naturally drawn upwards and gives a great backdrop to our statement lighting.
Lighting
When it comes to lighting in your primary bedroom – invest in quality and statement pieces that will create a layered and inviting look that you’ll never tire of. We opted for a statement chandelier that feels sexy and inviting and unique and paired it with timeless classics for our table lamps, floor lamp and reading wall sconces. The multiple layers of lighting instantly elevates the room and allows us to create different moments for different functions throughout the space.
Seating Area
If the square footage allows, introduce a seating area in the primary bedroom. Even one chair will do as you see here in my own primary bedroom. I’ve created a proper reading nook, adorned with a comfy oversized chair, martini table and floor lamp. Multiple seating or lounging moments makes the space feel like a “proper” primary suite retreat.
Multiple Patterns and Textures
When designing your primary bedroom, whether alongside a designer or on your own, don’t be afraid to introduce different patterns and textures throughout the space for added visual interest. Opt for patterned textiles and textiles with varying textures. Floral pillows and blankets add a whimsical touch to the space. Here you see my use of linens, boucle, floral embroidered patterns, gingham, velvet and a textured but solid colored rug. Tying all these variations together feels incredibly intentional and layered and ultimately creates a highly curated space.
Window Treatments
You can go in so many different directions with the window treatments for your primary bedroom. All of which, if well executed, can create a beautiful statement. For our primary bedroom I wanted to create a layered look that felt romantic and very much like a hotel experience for our own private retreat experience at home. We layered our linen blackout primary panels on top of sheer linen panels to allow for varying degrees of light filtration. For an added whimsical touch I chose a height for the panels that allowed them to slightly puddle on the ground for a cozier look. The combination of these panels instantly elevate the space and tie in wonderfully with all the other varying elements we selected for our bedroom.
