Introduction
In design, it’s the details that resonate the most. Brass fixtures that patina over time, wire-brushed hardwood flooring, limewashed walls with a soft, textured finish, or a delicately patterned wallpaper are choices that reflect the thoughtful design. From the initial design concept to the selection of fixtures to decisions about furniture and art, each element contributes to the overall aesthetic and functionality of a room. One often overlooked yet incredibly impactful aspect of designing a space is the window treatments. These finishing details not only play a functional role but also contribute to the general feeling of a space. Finding the balance between beauty and function is important, and with the careful selection of window treatments during the design process, you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.
A Part of the Process
The impact of window treatments is undeniable. Beautifully tailored, box pleated, or pinched curtains bring a traditional charm to a room while a bamboo or a classic Roman shade feels textured and organic. Rather than waiting until the final stages of a project when decision fatigue sets in, the consideration and selection of window coverings should be an integral part of the planning process. Incorporating the right window treatments can transform a room, creating a beautiful and refined space that reflects purposeful design.

Window treatments play an important role in creating a cohesive design. They can tie together various elements in the room, such as the color palette, textures, and patterns. Neutral-toned linen curtains bring a soft elegance to a space and can complement both bold and understated decor, creating a layered look that adds warmth and balance.
Another excellent choice for window coverings is roller shades. Whether your design preference is contemporary or traditional, roller shades can be customized in various fabrics and colors to match the room's style, and they pair well with many different styles of drapery for a polished look. In our Haldibrook project, we used TWOPAGES Taylor Light Filtering shades. Our client loved the fact that they are both stylish and a practical choice for privacy.

Thoughtful Design, Personal Style
Window treatments are a great way to express your personal style. I love pairing tailored or pinch pleated curtains in an earthy, natural tone with a classic neutral Roman shade and warm bronze hardware to achieve a timeless, European aesthetic. On the other hand, if your taste leans more toward an eclectic interior design, consider using bamboo shades. They add texture and visual interest without feeling heavy or competing with the room’s furniture and decor.

Cafe curtains have grown in popularity over the past few years and are perfect for a variety of design preferences such as Farmhouse, Cottage, or French Country. Cafe curtains are a great choice for a kitchen or bathroom window as light still brightens the room and they provide ample privacy. Choose a neutral-coloured cotton or linen fabric for a soft, airy look or a plaid or floral pattern for something more playful and nostalgic.
By thoughtfully selecting window treatments, you can create spaces that not only look curated and beautiful but are also functional! Remember, it’s the details that make a house feel like a home, and carefully chosen window treatments are an important part of achieving a coordinated and inviting finished space.
