1. History and Origins of Drapes:
Initially, curtains were used to block out heating and cooling from windows and doors. Before central air conditioning and heating, people used simple fabric or animal hides to cover windows.

By the 1850s, curtains became more decorative, with long, thick drapery and intricate fabric designs. The style evolved to become more “crafty” and ornamental.
2. The Evolution and Function of Drapes:
Over time, the types of drapes expanded, especially with the introduction of sheer, light-filtering curtains (like linen). These curtains offer the benefit of natural light filtering while adding a layered look when combined with other window treatments like Roman shades or wooden blinds.
Light-filtering curtains are versatile, creating a light and airy feel in the room, making them ideal for spaces that require a bright and relaxed atmosphere.
3. How Designers Use Drapes:
Well-known designers like Shay McGee, Jake Arnold, and Kelly Wearstler often use sheer, light-filtering curtains to add depth and texture to a space. Though Kelly Wearstler tends to prefer Roman shades, when she does use light-filtering drapes, they complement her aesthetic and help tie the space together.
