Creating Your Perfect Outdoor Oasis: Tips for Maximizing Outdoor Living
By Kristen Cuthbert
There is something special about outdoor living. Not only does it provide additional living space during the warmer months, it can lend a sense of serenity to our day-to-day living. Having a little place nestled in nature where we can read a book or have cocktails with friends adds an extra layer of respite to our summer season. If we set up our porches and yards in a way that is conducive to eating and living, we end up spending much more time outdoors. And it is scientifically proven that time in nature is good for our souls. So what can we do to set our spaces up for a season of living life outside as much as possible?
Tackle your Functional Needs
Think through your functional needs. What are you wanting to actually do in these spaces? Do you hope to eat outside? And if so, with how many people? Do you want to play? Is there space for that? Do you desire to sit and sip coffee and cocktails? Make a quick list of all the things you would like to accomplish on your porch, in your yard, or on your patio.

Work through your Layout
2. Sketch out your layout. Measure your space and determine what you can and cannot fit. Do you have space for a table? Generally, you’ll need 24” of length for each person at the table and 36” of space around the table for adequate traffic flow. Looking for a softer set-up for coffee and conversation? Find some furniture that offers at least two separate seats where you can face your guests for optimal conversational comfort. For example, two chairs with a small side table in between or a sofa with adjacent two chairs and a coffee table in between them. Lastly, consider purchasing furnishings with multiple functions. Perhaps your dining chairs are upholstered and extra comfortable so you can both dine and lounge in a smaller space.

Be sure to Accessorize!
3. Fill it in! When it comes to outdoor living, the accessories make the space come to life. Adding lots of plants, of varying heights, grouped together off to the side, will only enhance the feeling of being outdoors. Colorful or monochromatic accent pillows and throw blankets will lend comfort to yourself and your guests. If you are creating a space on your porch, sheer drapes hung around the perimeter of your porch add an easy-breezy feeling and also help with privacy and sun protection. Layered lighting is the most important part for a welcoming evening in your new outdoor space. Add weather-proof string lights and battery powered lanterns grouped together throughout your space. Tabletop candles and lamps add function and ambiance to your experience.

When creating any living space, layers of texture and lighting will bring it to life. To ensure success, start with function first so that the space will work for those who will be enjoying it. Then, choose appropriate furnishings that accomplish those functional goals. And lastly, add in accessories like pillows, throws, candles, drapes, plants and lighting. Wishing you a summer full of fun and connection in your newly curated outdoor space!
