Cotton, Silk, Linen, or Velvet—- Which is the Right Material for your Window Treatments?

“Choosing the right material for your window treatments is about more than just looks—it’s about finding the perfect balance between style and functionality. “-- Esther Ellard

In a world where there are countless materials to choose from, design fatigue is real.

When you consider all the decisions that you have to make when designing your home, it is no wonder that often, window treatments are one of the last things that you think about. However, I would recommend truly spending some time considering the types of materials you choose in each of your spaces.

No matter how beautiful a pattern on your window treatment looks, if it is not a functional material for that particular space then you will grow to dislike your window treatments very easily. I am going to walk you through some of my top favorite materials for window treatments and discuss which spaces they work well in.

Cotton

Cotton is one of my personal favorite window treatment options. This is one of the most popular material choices in our industry because it is known for its durability and versatility.

Some other great benefits of choosing cotton is that it is eco friendly and is in its natural form hypoallergenic. However, cotton tends to fade easily and absorbs moisture which makes it the wrong choice when it comes to humid environments and spaces that receive harsh direct sunlight. Cotton window treatments are the best choice for standard bedrooms that get a variety of lighting throughout the day but would not be the best choice for bathrooms or sunroom areas.

Tip: Opt for cotton in living rooms, bedrooms, and dining spaces.

Linen

If there is one material that has become more popular in recent years, it would be linen. Linen originates from the flax plant and has been associated mostly with a warm, organic aesthetic. Linen tends to give a more natural and textured aesthetic, promotes breathability, and has great UV blocking properties. On the flip side, linen tends to be more high maintenance as it is prone to wrinkling easily. If considering linen window treatments, make sure you purchase them treated or as a blend to avoid shrinkage as well.

Tip: Linen window treatments are best for bedrooms, kitchens, and dining areas.

Velvet

When searching for a stand out material that exudes luxury and elegance, then velvet should be your first choice.

Velvet has a short, plush pile texture to it and has been known to play into more modern and contemporary design styles. The great thing about velvet is that it does insulate very well while also maintaining great sound absorption. A few of the practical elements to consider with velvet is that the cost is much higher and the material itself is heavy which can at times pose problems during installation. As a designer who specializes in family homes, I would avoid this material in kid spaces, bathrooms, or homes with pets.

Tip: The best space for velvet would be in bedrooms, dining rooms, living rooms, and entertainment spaces.

Silk

Silk is most known for coming from the larvae of silkworms.

This material has a high gloss sheen and is best used in high end designs to showcase luxurious spaces. Silk is the perfect material for homeowners who like rich colors, desire eco conscious options, and understand the insulating properties silk has throughout every season. On the other hand, silk is prone to water spots and stains which makes it the worst option for spaces like kitchens and bathrooms. High quality silk can last for years to come but does require a homeowner who does not mind giving it the proper care and maintenance.

Tip: Silk is a great window treatment option for bedrooms and low traffic spaces

Choosing the right material for your window treatments is about more than just looks—it’s about finding the perfect balance between style and functionality. Each material— cotton, linen, velvet, or silk— brings its own strengths and challenges. By considering the needs of each room, like light, humidity, or traffic, you can make thoughtful choices that work for your home and lifestyle. With the right material, your window treatments can elevate the design of your space while staying practical and long-lasting. Take your time, and let your selections reflect both your style and how you live in your home—it’s a small detail that makes a big difference.
