Color Drenched and Confident: Creating a Moody Home Office

Design Inspiration
Dramatic – not a word you commonly hear in the design world but that is the word that comes to mind when I think about the initial design process for the office. Our office sits right inside the entrance of our home. I knew I wanted the office to stand out and be a dramatic shift away from my mostly white interior walls. My husband uses this space the most so I wanted it to be dramatic, but feel masculine and moody. I knew I could accomplish that with paint.

Color Drenching Technique
I opted for color drenching the room. What is color drenching? That is when you take a paint color and use it on walls, trim and ceiling. Painting one accent wall is a dated look of the past, but color drenching is trending and it is one trend I was excited to jump on. I went with Benjamin Moore Black Panther. It is one of my favorite black paint colors. It is a true black but has a softer feel to it than the popular Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams. I knew it would pair beautifully with my white oak floors. My painters questioned me, but I remained confident in the vision.

Room Styling and Furnishings
I wanted to bring in a darker, rich wood tone in the desk and add some pops of leather in the room. Styling the shelves was a great opportunity to bring in some character and charm through family photos, books, and sports memorabilia. I kept it neutral with the throw pillows, rug and art. The room still didn’t feel quite complete.

Window Treatments and Final Touches
I knew I needed to select a window treatment in order to give the room that polished and complete look. We weren’t looking for a ton of privacy so I really wanted the beauty of the fabric to drive the decision. TWOPAGES is always my go to when it comes to window treatments so I ordered some samples of their Rae Collection Bamboo Shades. Typically I am drawn to a wood tone or a linen material on shades, but I was looking for something unique…something different. I came across Style #P14 in the color Ink Black and was sold. It had a beautiful texture and was a mix of black and gray tones. I loved the black striping and the knotting detail that was throughout the fabric. The fabric felt masculine, moody, and unique. Exactly what I was going for! I used the measurement calculator on their website to ensure proper sizing. The shade arrived promptly and installation is always easy with TWOPAGES. They have so many videos and resources available online to help the installation process. I am so happy with how this room turned out! When people enter my home they almost always compliment me on the office right away. Don’t be afraid to take risks in design. They often have the biggest payout.
