COASTAL STYLE HOME FOR 2025

"This month, I’m sharing some insights about how the new Coastal style will look and some tips for applying it to your home."-- Jacky De La Guia
Traditionally, the Coastal style was richer with accents that reminded us of the beach such as seashells, and decorative boats, or the use of blue color. Still, with the rise of mindful practices, we've reduced it to a more minimalistic style, where it is more important to truly reflect the idea of the beach as the ideal relaxing place.
INTRODUCING MORE GREEN
Blue and teal predominated in the Coastal style because of our visual association with the ocean, but now we introduce soft greens as part of it to create an airy and breezy contrast with whites.
For this living room, we chose algae and Caribbean Sea greens to add the tropical touch that our client was looking for.
TEXTURES THAT SIMULATE THE SAND
Light wood and rattan have predominated in the Coastal style as the favorite materials that visually simulate the sand. Another one is the seagrass, which also offers a touch that makes us feel we’re on the beach.
For this design, the rug played an important role since the way it was made just looked like you had sand in your living room.
DRESSING YOUR WINDOWS WITH DRAPES OR NATURAL ROLLER SHADES
If your room doesn’t receive a lot of light or privacy is not an important matter, I like to recommend bare windows, but most of the time our clients want to dress their windows according to the style they like to apply.
For the Coastal I like to keep it minimal, so I recommend sheers, light filtering cotton or linen drapes in solid color, or natural roller shades made from bamboo which is eco-friendly and completes the look.
For this bedroom for an Airbnb, I picked bamboo shades that complete a very eco-friendly and mindful space.
BRINGING THE OCEAN FEELING
The idea of designing in Coastal style is to bring the fresh and airy feeling that the Ocean gives us when we’re sitting on the sand or walking barefoot and enjoying the views. So, the new Coastal is more about how to create that experience than adding our souvenirs from our vacation, and we do so with the use of light wood; textures that simulate sand; cotton, and linen as main fabrics for their fresh touch, and tones that remind us of the color of the sea.
This master bedroom is the perfect example of Modern Coastal. I picked straight-line furniture in light wood, the rug is handmade and the imperfections make look like the sand on the beach, and the colors create a serene atmosphere.
