Choosing the Perfect Curtains
By Arlyn Molina
Beautiful designs can fall flat when a single, important element in a space is missing. A signature piece I always incorporate in my client’s homes and recommend incessantly are window treatments— fancy word for curtains. If you only KNEW what all they could do for a room, you would instantly feel the same way as I do. Let’s begin our lesson, shall we?

Trick Your Eyes
I had a client ask me recently if curtains in a room would make it appear “stuffy” and “small appearing”. My immediate response? Nope. In fact, curtains bring the complete opposite effect: they make a space feel bigger and windows appear larger. Of course, this is believing they are installed correctly. You need to hang the curtains as high as possible without them looking “off” and as wide as possible. I always aim for a minimum of one foot wide on each side of the window. Curtains hung incorrectly WILL look poorly. Curtains hung with these tips will trick the eye and completely transform your space.

Are you a material girl or boy?
When it comes to curtains, YES! You have to be! I highly recommend that you order samples to see them in your lighting and with your decor. Take time in waiting for the products to arrive and be patient. This is an important decision, after all. Only after reviewing samples should you choose a material that isn’t so matchy matchy but coordinates well. Say it with me: “Too much matching is for amateurs.” I encourage you to select a color and/or patten that coordinates and plays well with your existing design, but is not a completely obvious choice. This is how you make your curtains stand out and your design appear anything but flat.

Curtain jewelry?
YES! Let’s embellish your curtains with jewelry. By this I mean a nice, hefty curtain rod and some curtain rings. Look for a solid piece that continues the rhythm of metals you already have in your space. There’s black, brass, and even antique bronze that look stunning in numerous spaces and that I often go back to for my design clients. For spaces for little ones, I recommend someone fun, cute, and even unique without being tacky. Remember we are going for classy and timeless.

Finally, remember that in anything and everything you design around your home, it should be a reflection of YOU. What speaks to you? What calms you and makes your home feel like a haven? This is of utmost importance. May these tips serve to enhance your space and provide you with confidence to dress your windows.
