5 Ways to Love Your Home This Winter

By Genny Rubin

Winter is the perfect time to embrace coziness at home—think warm textures, inviting colors, and small changes that make a big impact. Whether you're hunkering down for a snowstorm or just craving a more inviting space, here are five ways to add warmth and comfort to your home this season.

1. Add Texture

Layering textures instantly makes a space feel cozier and more lived-in. Think wicker baskets for storage, a jute rug to ground the space, or rattan accents to add warmth. A chunky knit throw or linen pillows can also soften up your seating and create that perfect inviting vibe. The key is mixing materials—soft with structured, matte with glossy—to create a space that feels rich and inviting.

2. Color Drench Your Walls

If you're looking for the ultimate cozy effect, go bold with color-drenched walls. This means painting your trim, walls, and even the ceiling in the same hue for a seamless, cocooning effect. It brings depth, drama, and a sense of warmth, especially in the winter months. I recently painted my family room in Taiga by Benjamin Moore, a deep green that adds richness and character to the space. It feels both grounding and sophisticated—exactly what I wanted!

3. Bring in Blooms

Fresh or faux, flowers breathe life into a space. In the colder months, greenery can make all the difference in brightening a room and lifting your mood. My current favorites are green hydrangeas and classic white roses. If fresh blooms aren’t an option, dried florals like eucalyptus can add texture and warmth while lasting all season long.

4. Purge & Organize

A cozy home isn’t just about adding things—it’s also about removing what no longer serves you. If something doesn’t spark joy (yes, Marie Kondo was onto something), it’s time to let it go. This applies to everything: clothing, dishware, books, even expired beauty products. A decluttered space makes room for the things you truly love and appreciate.

5. Soften Your Windows with Sheer Curtains

This month, I added sheer curtains to my family room, and they’ve completely transformed the space. Since we just color-drenched the walls in Taiga by Benjamin Moore, I wanted something light and airy to balance the deep color. I found the TWOPAGES Flynn Lightweight Sheer Curtains in a warm brown shade, and they have truly added life to the room. As I long for brighter spring days ahead, these curtains bring in soft, diffused light and a feeling of relaxation, making the room feel both cozy and fresh.

Winter doesn’t have to feel dull or dreary. With a few intentional updates, you can create a home that feels inviting, warm, and full of life—even on the coldest days.
