Timeless Design is a Myth—Staying True to Yourself is the Trend That’s Here to Stay

By Brittany McNab

As an interior designer, I’m often asked what’s “in” or what the latest trends are. While I do love the new and novel, my answer can sometimes be disappointing: I don’t exactly believe in trends. On the flip side, when people ask me what I think is timeless, my answer may feel equally unsatisfying: timeless design doesn’t really exist. In fact, it’s often just a trend in disguise.

How’s that for a buzzkill?

Here’s the real truth: anything that stands the test of time, both in quality and style, is high-quality, versatile, and something you truly love. Instead of chasing a fleeting idea of timelessness, focus on creating a space that reflects your personality and works for your lifestyle.

Embracing Personal Style Over Timelessness

Rather than trying to achieve an elusive, one-size-fits-all concept of timeless design, let your home be a reflection of you. Here’s how:

1. Prioritize Functionality

Trends come and go, but a well-designed layout that fits your needs will always feel relevant. Focus on features like ample storage, practical furniture placement, and easy-to-clean materials.

Be realistic with yourself. That stunning arched cabinet with glass doors may be the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen, but are you committed to keeping it styled, dusted, and tidy forever? Or are you more of a “throw everything in the cabinet and deal with it later” person? Asking questions about your habits, cleaning preferences, and lifestyle will help you choose pieces that truly work for you—now and in the future.

2. Mix Old and New

Layering vintage and contemporary pieces can create a dynamic, lived-in look that transcends trends. For example, pair a sleek, modern sofa with a vibrant vintage rug for character and depth.

A general rule I follow is the 80/20 principle: incorporate 80% of one style and 20% of another. This approach makes your space feel intentional without locking you into a specific style. Leaving room for evolution in your tastes and preferences ensures your home grows with you, not against you.

3. Invest in Quality

Don’t buy something just because it’s available or on sale. Instead, spend your budget on well-made, durable pieces that will stand the test of time functionally, even if styles change.

For example, invest in high-quality items like window coverings, sofas, chairs, dining tables, and chairs. Look for durable construction, easy-to-maintain finishes, and fabrics that can handle daily wear and tear. These foundational pieces anchor your space and ensure it ages gracefully.

4. Use Trends Thoughtfully

Trends are fun, but they’re best used as accents rather than the foundation of your design. For example, incorporate a trendy paint color on an accent wall or swap out bold-patterned throw pillows.

These elements are easy (and relatively inexpensive) to update if your tastes shift. As a designer, I love to change these details regularly—even seasonally! While that might not be for everyone, it’s much easier to switch out pillows or repaint a wall than replace large pieces like a rug or sectional.

5. Insert Yourself Into Each Space

One thing that never changes is what you find beautiful and the memories that make you who you are. Infuse your home with art, decorative objects, and personal mementos that bring you joy and tell your story.

These “joyful additions” make your space feel truly yours, evoking good memories and a sense of home every time you see them. The best designs are personal; they reflect what’s important to you and showcase your unique version of beauty and comfort.

Conclusion

Timeless design is a myth—but your design can stand the test of time if it’s rooted in quality, functionality, and personal expression. By embracing what you love, mixing old and new, and using trends thoughtfully, you create a home that evolves with you.

The most enduring trend isn’t a color palette or a furniture style—it’s staying true to yourself. Your home should tell your story, reflect your personality, and above all, be a place where you feel completely at ease.

So, the next time you feel pressured to follow a trend or chase timelessness, remember: a home that’s you will never go out of style.
