A Keen Eye Towards Well Designed Spaces
By Caitlin Fitch of Caitlin Fitch Designs
There’s an art to creating a visually appealing space and it can be more accessible than you might think. Well-designed spaces are founded in both function and form. They are harmonious, rich in character and tell a story of those who inhabit them. As you approach your next design project you’ll want to consider the following tips.
The Lens of Feng Shui
Creating a sense of balance in your space, using the principles of feng shui (without sacrificing design) allows you to maximize harmony in your day to day living. When we think about seeking balance we consider a mix of linear and rounded objects, the placement of furniture, color palette selection to appeal to a room’s intended functionality, and avoiding opportunities to acquire clutter. Without getting too granular, our intentions here are to utilize the lens of feng shui in our approach to design as a way of promoting chi – a Chinese concept that embodies the flow of energy through all things (and beings) – so that we may live more harmonious, fluid and intentional lives.
Fun fact: Feng Shui interior design masters and principles are employed by Fortune 500 companies to ensure optimal productivity, motivation, relationships and prosperity are taken into consideration in the building of their facilities.
Mixing and Matching Patterns and Textures
Introducing different patterns and textures into a space creates visual interest. When constructing your mood board select a focal pattern as the centerpiece of your vision and then layer in additional patterns and textured fabrics that are complimentary in color. This does not mean you need to select varying colors of the same family – invite colors from the opposite side of the color wheel to create balance. Pairing different patterns such as a large-scale floral print with a smaller geometric pattern will create added intrigue and conversation within the space.
Layering
When in doubt, layer! Layering lends character and dimension to a space. You’ll want to take all facets of a room’s design into account when layering – paint, furnishings, flooring, lighting, wallpaper, artwork, drapery, hardware and accessories. Pick foundational colors, patterns and materials as your foundation to build upon. Each additional layer is another opportunity for additional depth in your space.
Introducing Old and New
Curating a combination of modern and collected and found pieces in your spaces creates an eclectic and storied conversation. This is a beautiful way to integrate sentimental family heirlooms and memorable found treasures into your designs for a more layered look. Don’t be afraid to pair an uber modern sofa with your Grandmother’s 19th century chest.
Finishing Touches
The finishing touches are what complete a room and make it uniquely your own. You can do this by incorporating your curated decorative objects, your drapery, throw pillows, artwork, aesthetically pleasing storage items, etc. Styling a room is all about groupings, pairing décor of varying heights and textures and colors, and always keeping functionality in mind. Remember that home takes time, so don’t rush this portion of the process. Collect your décor over time to create a well curated space that is most reflective of your story.
