Dining rooms seem to be the forgotten area in our homes, especially if it’s not integrated in the open plan. And most of the houses have an extra area that we called the breakfast nook that we use more often, so the formal dining room is only for special occasions.
That is the reason why I find most of the time outdated dining rooms with old furniture that was pulled together from thrift stores, walls that still have vintage wallpaper and in general with a gloom feeling. So, let’s make your dining room appealing and inviting.
One Style
If your home already has a style set, it’s more convenient to design/decorate the dining space to be cohesive with the rest of the house. Most of the time clients are looking for one single style because they like its characteristics. It can be coastal, traditional, glam, farmhouse…
In the picture above, the dining room is coastal. This style can be recognized for the use of light wood, rattan, the seagrass rug, and the light colors.
Set the Mood with the Light
Light is an important element in design. It shapes the room, sets the mood, gives you different feelings. For example bright natural light is perfect for contemporary and modern dining rooms, while classic styles look better with warm electrical light.
For this design the client wanted a classic elegant mood, so the lighting was selected to create a private moment and enhance the furniture.
Small Renovation
If you’re living in a more traditional house, keeping it updated is a must. So give a fresh coat of painting, and repair your flooring. It's a great start and a budget-friendly option. And depending on your style preferences we can always go a bit far, and add other elements like an accent wall with wallpaper.
This project didn’t have a lot of traditional architectural elements, except the arched windows and the classic trim, but the place was over 50 years old, so it was necessary to repaint and decorate according to the original time, the early 70s. The selected furniture is Mid-Century, the peach color was trendy back then, and adding a psychedelic wallpaper was necessary.
Beyond Styles: For the Love of Being Unique
For some people it is important to have a house that reflects their unique taste. Most of these people are in the design world or have interest in arts and music. And how to achieve that? Think in the mood that you want, invest in local art, and use the budget for pieces that are high quality and unique. Unique can be the upholstery of the chairs, the drapes that you're hanging for the windows, a chandelier that you don’t see on social media.
