Creating a Cozy, Inviting Dining Room in 5 Simple Steps

By Cameron Mason

"By someone who believes the dining room—not the kitchen—is the true heart of the home."

Dining Room

For many, the kitchen gets the title of "heart of the home." But in our family, it's always been the dining room. It’s where we gather to celebrate milestones, support each other through hard days, and disconnect from screens to reconnect with each other. When we moved into our house, the dining room was anything but warm. The walls were painted a stark white, the windows were bare, and the linoleum floors had seen better days. But transforming it into a cozy, inviting space didn’t take a full renovation—just a few thoughtful updates. Here’s how we did it:

1. Start with Paint

We warmed up the room with Behr’s Swiss Coffee, a soft white that feels inviting without being too stark. Swapping out the worn linoleum for warm wood flooring made a huge difference in both look and feel.

2. Choose a Functional Table

If you like hosting but are tight on space, look for a wood dining table with inserts—Facebook Marketplace is a goldmine. Most days, we use it as a four-seater, but it easily expands to fit ten when we need it.

3. Layer in Texture

Curtains and drapes aren’t just for privacy—they add warmth and personality. I like mixing solid drapes with patterned curtains for depth and visual interest.

4. Bring in Greenery

Plants breathe life into a space—literally and figuratively. Even a small potted herb on the table can brighten the room.

5. Add Personal Touches

Trinkets, tea lights, family photos, fresh flowers, cozy seat cushions—these are the final touches that make the room yours. There’s no such thing as too many when it comes to what brings you joy — especially pictures.

And lastly, don’t save your dining room for special occasions. Host a Monday night dinner or a Friday morning coffee date. The true beauty of this space is in using it—often and with people you love.
